What kind of enclosure should I provide for my crested gecko?

Crested geckos are arboreal animals that require a tall enclosure with plenty of climbing opportunities. A minimum size for one adult crested gecko is 45cm x 45cm x 60cm (18in x 18in x 24in), although a larger enclosure is always better.

Enclosure material

The most commonly used materials for crested gecko enclosures are glass or screen. Glass terrariums are better at retaining heat and humidity, while screen enclosures provide better ventilation. Whichever material you choose, make sure that the enclosure is secure and escape-proof.

Climbing opportunities

Crested geckos are excellent climbers and require plenty of vertical space to explore. Provide plenty of branches, vines, and other decorations to create a three-dimensional environment for your gecko. You can also add artificial plants to provide cover and create a more naturalistic environment.

Lighting and heating

Crested geckos are nocturnal animals and do not require UVB lighting. However, they do need a heat source to maintain their body temperature. A low-wattage heat bulb or under-tank heater can be used to provide a warm basking spot, but make sure that the temperature gradient is not too extreme.

Substrate

Crested geckos do not require a substrate that holds moisture, as this can lead to health problems. Paper towels, reptile carpet, or coconut fiber are all suitable options. Avoid substrates that can cause impaction, such as loose substrate or sand.

Overall, a tall and spacious enclosure with plenty of climbing opportunities, secure ventilation, and appropriate heating and lighting will provide a comfortable and stimulating environment for your crested gecko.
