Do Crested Geckos hibernate?

One question that is often asked by pet owners is whether or not crested geckos hibernate.

The answer is no, crested geckos do not hibernate. Unlike many other reptile species, crested geckos do not experience a true hibernation period. This is because they come from a tropical climate where temperatures are relatively constant throughout the year.

Crested geckos are ectothermic, which means that they rely on their environment to regulate their body temperature. In the wild, they are active year-round and do not experience the same changes in temperature that would trigger hibernation in other species.

While crested geckos do not hibernate, they do undergo a period of decreased activity during the winter months. This is known as brumation. During this time, their metabolism slows down, and they may spend more time sleeping and less time moving around. However, this is not a true hibernation period and should not be confused with it.

This is influenced by a variety of factors, including:

  1. Temperature: Although crested geckos do not experience extreme temperature changes in their natural habitat, they may still be affected by fluctuations in temperature. If the temperature drops too low, it can trigger a period of decreased activity.
  2. Lighting: The amount of light that a crested gecko receives can also influence brumation. During the winter months, the days are shorter, and there is less sunlight. This can lead to a decrease in activity levels.
  3. Nutrition: The availability of food and water can also affect brumation. If a crested gecko does not have access to adequate food and water, it may enter a period of decreased activity.

If your crested gecko enters a period of brumation, there are several things you can do to ensure that it remains healthy:

  1. Monitor temperature: Make sure that the temperature in your crested gecko’s enclosure remains stable. If it drops too low, you may need to provide additional heat.
  2. Provide adequate lighting: Even though the days are shorter during the winter months, your crested gecko still needs access to light. Make sure that its enclosure is well-lit during the day.
  3. Provide adequate nutrition: While your crested gecko may eat less during brumation, it still needs access to fresh food and water. Make sure that its enclosure is well-stocked with these essentials.
